German Studies

Elliott Schreiber came to Vassar in Fall 2003 from Indiana University, Bloomington, where completed his doctoral dissertation in Germanic Studies. He received his B.A. from The University of Chicago, and has also studied in Berlin, Tübingen, and Innsbruck. His research centers around 18th-century literature and philosophy, with a special focus on theories of space, which he examines through the prism of a wide variety of contemporary theories, including those of Michel Foucault, Henri Lefebvre, and Niklas Luhmann (whose work he has also translated). His research and teaching also explores German-Jewish relations from the 18th century to the present, especially the work of the 19th-century writer Heinrich Heine. His teaching includes courses both in Germanic Studies and in International Studies. Outside Chicago Hall and the library, he can frequently be sighted jogging the trails beyond the Vassar farm and playing ultimate frisbee.
